Matthew Guy has hit out at critics of the Victorian Liberal Party’s new commitment to legislating an emissions reduction target, saying the same move in NSW created little fanfare.

The state opposition has committed to a emissions reduction target of 50 per cent by 2030.

Critics have questioned whether the motive of the policy is to scare off any climate-driven political challengers, which turned the federal election on its head.

But the state opposition leader said that wasn’t the case.

“The NSW Liberal government set the same targets to not much fanfare,” Mr Guy said on 3AW Drive.

“The NSW Liberal Party set the same target and it’s not much of a big deal – it’s just get on with business – the Victorian Liberal Party sets it and it seems to trigger a whole bunch of people on Sky TV.

“We are just going to get on with business, because it’s the right thing to do.”

Mr Guy said it was clear voters wanted action on climate change.

“I think Australians are sick to death of this debate, Tom,” he said.

“I think they just want governments to put in place a target and go and achieve it.”
