Many single-use plastic items are now banned in Victoria.

Single-use plastic drinking straws, cutlery, plates, drink stirrers, cotton bud sticks and expanded polystyrene food and drink containers are banned in the state from today.

But there are some exemptions to the ban.

Single use plastic items which integrated into food or drink packaging, such as a straw on the side of a juice box or a single-use plastic spoon included in a yogurt tub, will be allowed to be sold for another three years.

Gail Sloane, CEO at Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia, said it didn’t mean people had to buy them.

She said attitudes also needed to change.
