Man punched and kicked in brazen CBD tram stop attack

A man says he was attacked in brazen assault over a seat at a CBD tram stop.

Sam* was sitting on a bench on Collins Street at about 7.20pm when he was approached by four females and one male who he believes were aged in their late teens.

There were many free seats at the tram stop, but Sam says the group wanted him to move from his seat.

“The guy sat on my left and one of the girls sat on my right,” he told Neil Mitchell.

“There was plenty of seats on the bench on the other side as well but no they just wanted me to get out of the seat.

“When I said ‘No’ … the back and forth went on for a minute, then out of nowhere the girl on the right just smacks me in the head, punches me in the back of my head.

“Followed by the guy who was sitting on my left. He also jumps out of the seat and he punches me in the face, on my cheek.”

Sam says two of the women pinned him against a rubbish bin and the group punched his back and head, and kicked his legs.

The victim retreated and managed to board his tram and get away from the group.

He says two Metro Trams workers witnessed the incident, but did not intervene.

Sam received minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.

Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident.
