Burglar attacks man with sledgehammer in Melbourne’s south-east

A resident has been assaulted with a sledgehammer during an aggravated burglary in Melbourne’s south-east this morning.
A Langwarrin man initially heard someone outside his Elm Grove property at about 3am, and went outside to find a man attempting to steal tools from his ute in the driveway.
He confronted the offender and a struggle ensued, before the male offender has chased the man back into his property and assaulted him with a sledgehammer.
Neighbours raised the alarm and police were quick to respond, arresting the male suspect in the backyard of a nearby home.
The victim, a 37-year-old man, has been taken to hospital.
The 33-year-old suspect is under police guard in hospital.
