Major change proposed to stop ‘outrageous’ Victorian taxi practice

The Andrews government is proposing a major change to taxi fares amid a growing problem with exorbitant price gouging.

In 2018, legislation deregulating the industry allowed taxi drivers to request set fares with no maximum limit and refuse passengers who won’t pay them, rather than using meter pricing.

Transport Matters Party leader Rod Barton welcomed the plan to roll back the changes made five years ago, saying the upfront fares some taxi drivers have been charging are “outrageous”.

“The regulator here has failed miserably and the Department has failed miserably,” he told Heidi Murphy, filling in for Neil Mitchell.

“The government has to do something.”
