Lord mayor of the City of Melbourne, Nick Reece, has shed light on the “very big” joint exercise with Metro Trains to clean up Flinders Street Station.

It after complaints of the clock not working properly, and stains to tiles in the underpasses, as the Degraves Street subway reopens after three years in preparation for the Metro Tunnel.

“It’s actually the biggest, single site clean-up job that the city has ever engaged in,” Councillor Reece told Tom Elliott on 3AW Mornings.

Despite admitting there’s still issues with the station, the lord mayor defended the state of the historic Melbourne landmark.

“I reckon that the station is looking better than it has in many, many years,” Reece said.

But the 3AW Mornings host isn’t convinced the station is appealing at the moment.

“From a distance it looks good, up close I still think it looks a bit tatty and grubby,” Elliott said.
