Melbourne’s most frustrating bike lanes, as nominated by 3AW listeners

Melbourne City Council is rolling out an extra 40 kilometres of protected bike lanes in a bid to encourage more people to cycle as people return to the city after lockdowns.

But callers to Neil Mitchell’s program say they’ve been left frustrated by many of the new separated bike lanes, which many say are making congestion worse for cars.

Program producer Michael Hilder hit the bike lanes this morning — and found very few cyclists out and about.

Speaking to Neil Mitchell from La Trobe Street, near the corner of Queen Street, he said there wasn’t a bike in sight.

“To my right is a slight traffic jam, probably 30 or 40 cars. To my left there is an electronic scooter on the footpath, to the front of me — zero bikes,” Michael said.
