It’s been revealed that a Life Saving Victoria report released five years ago recommended significant changes to signage at the beach which yesterday became the site of Victoria’s worst drowning tragedy in almost 20 years.

The 2019 report identified Bass Coast Shire as a national drowning “blackspot” and called on the council to introduce a uniform signage strategy.

“Now I understand the contract to produce these warning signs was signed late last year … they are still being made,” 3AW’s Jacqui Felgate said.

“It’s hard for us, we don’t hold onto the purse strings,” General manager of health promotion and communications at Life Saving Victoria, Dr Bernadette Matthews, told 3AW’s Jacqui Felgate.
