Liberal Senator Jane Hume says she suspects Concetta Fierravanti-Wells’ extraordinary attack on the Prime Minister was sparked by her preselection battle loss.

Senator Fierravanti-Wells said in parliament Scott Morrison wasn’t fit to be Prime Minister, also calling into question the conduct of immigration minister Alex Hawke.

Speaking on 3AW Drive, Senator Hume said it would have been a “kick in the guts” for her colleague.

“I can understand her disappointment,” she said.

She rejected the claims made by Senator Fierravanti-Wells.

“That’s certainly not my experience with the Prime Minister, or Mr Hawke,” Senator Hume said.

“I enjoy working with both.

“I can understand why she’d be upset, but I think it’s really important you see this for what it is.

“This is somebody being forced into retirement before they felt they were ready and that’s always disappointing.”
