Leigh Matthews makes a big call about Mason Cox
Leigh Matthews says Monday’s showing from Mason Cox was his best game for Collingwood, exceeding his heroics in the 2018 preliminary final.
Cox finished with a career-high 21 disposals and eight marks while also kicking a goal as the Pies stunned Melbourne at the MCG.
“That’s the best game Mason Cox has ever played, I’d have thought,” Matthews said on 3AW.
“That quarter he played in the preliminary final back in 2018, that was outstanding, when Collingwood beat Richmond … but in terms of what he did over a full game, I would have thought that’s the best he ever played.”
He said it was now up to Cox to back that effort up.
“For me, I wouldn’t be guaranteeing that he’d be playing well next week,” Matthews said.
“At his best, he’s a weapon, but there is a gigantic chasm between his best and his average, and worst.
“But, hey, all credit to him – he was outstanding.”
