Leigh Matthews calls reports on off-season Brisbane trip an ‘unbelievable beat up’

Brisbane Lions board member Leigh Matthews says stories on the club’s now infamous off-season trip to the US was an “unbelievable beat up”.

The Lions have vehemently denied reports that the trip late in 2023 – and the circumstances on how it unfolded – are to blame for the club’s slow start to the season.

After taking a week to speak to people at Brisbane, Leigh Matthews now believes there was “nothing ever in” linking the off-season trip to on-field results.

“That was an unbelievable beat up,” Matthews said on 3AW Football.

“There was nothing ever in it…in the last 10 days I’ve spoken to enough people around the club who’s views I trust and there was never anything in it.”
