Leigh Matthews calls for a maximum of 5-year contracts
AFL legend Leigh Matthews has called for a cap on player contracts.
It comes after North Melbourne reportedly offered a nine-year deal to GWS young gun Josh Kelly.
Speaking on 3AW Football, Matthews said clubs need to be protected from their own ambition.
‘I just think it’s reckless,’ Matthews said.
‘I’d love to see five-year contracts as the most you can contract for.’
Matthew Lloyd said Kelly should also be careful of the long-term deal as the salary cap will rise significantly over the next nine years.
‘In nine years time, will $1m be way unders for him?’ he said.
