Leading doctor’s urgent message to government as cancer ‘holy grail’ emerges
One of the country’s most highly qualified and respected doctors says we’re on the cusp of the “holy grail” of cancer cures, but there’s financial “tsunami” coming and it will cost lives if the federal government doesn’t act.

The “holy grail” is CAR T therapy and doctors say it will cure 80 per cent of cancers within 30 years, but it costs about $600,000 per patient.
It’s currently used predominantly to treat myeloma, but haematologist and director of molecular oncology at Epworth, Professor Miles Prince, says there’s “no question” it’s also capable of curing many other cancers.
But he’s concerned the federal government doesn’t have a plan to make the treatment accessible and affordable.
“Cost always has to be factored in but if we keep going along the line of ‘let’s not do this’, doing nothing is not the solution when patients are dying!,” he told Neil Mitchell.
