Get your BBQ ready for the season!

If your barbecue has been in winter hibernation, it’s essential to give it a thorough check-up before your guests arrive. Taking the time to prepare your grill now will ensure a smooth and successful summer entertaining season. Here’s a comprehensive guide to getting your barbecue ready for prime grilling!

Inspect Your Gas Bottle:

  • Age Check: If your gas bottle is over 10 years old, it’s time to replace it. The production date can be found on the collar of the bottle. Older bottles may not be safe to use and could compromise your cooking.
  • Gas Level: Ensure that your gas bottle is full. The last thing you want is to run out of gas halfway through cooking for your guests. To avoid this, consider keeping a second bottle on hand for emergencies or during large gatherings.

Check for Leaks:

  • Leak Inspection: Each time you connect your barbecue to a gas bottle, it’s crucial to check for leaks. Perform a ‘soapy water test’ by applying a soapy solution to the fittings and looking for bubbles, which indicate a leak. Address any leaks immediately to ensure safe and efficient grilling.

Clean and Maintain:

  • Exterior Cleaning: Use a dust brush to sweep away excess dust, spider webs, and any insects that may have taken up residence on the barbecue. This will help keep your grill in top condition and prevent any unpleasant surprises.
  • Interior Cleaning: Scrape down the inside of the cook box to remove grease and food residue. Replace old or damaged drip trays to ensure they effectively catch drips and prevent flare-ups. Check for and replace any rusted or worn-out components to maintain the barbecue’s performance.
  • Deep Cleaning: Wash the exterior components, including the lid and side tables, using hot water mixed with dishwashing detergent. For stubborn stains, you might need a specialized Weber barbecue cleaner to restore the finish.

Burn It Off:

  • Final Preparation: To ensure that your barbecue is hygienic and ready for cooking, turn it on to high heat and let it burn for 10 to 15 minutes. This process will help burn off any remaining residues and sanitize the grill.
