Kylie Moore-Gilbert urges government to take a stand after China hands Aussie suspended death sentence
Investigative reporter Nick McKenzie says the suspended death sentence handed to Dr Yang Hengjun serves as a chilling reminder to Australia about China’s judicial standards.
The pro-democracy writer has given a suspended death sentence after being accused of spying five years ago in a decision which has been slammed by Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
But McKenzie, who has worked on the story in the past, said China doesn’t care about Australia’s condemnation following the ruling.

“This is a great reminder that Beijing and the Chinese Government don’t care for Australian norms and what we value as a nation,” he told Jacqui Felgate on 3AW Drive. “They will do what their system requires when they feel like they wish to do it.”
Kylie Moore-Gilbert, who was wrongfully detained in an Iran prison for 804 days, says the Albanese government must ramp up its advocacy for Dr Hengjun.
“It can’t be business as usual with China,” she told Jacqui Felgate.
