Jimmy Bartel’s radical plan to revive AFL State of Origin concept

Jimmy Bartel has pitched a new formula for the AFL’s State of Origin game with efforts to revive the spectacle in 2025.
The Geelong legend also wants to see a series created that involves rival states fighting for the opportunity to play in the final against the defending champions.

“Why don’t we have it (AFL State of Origin) during the gap between Preliminary Final and the Grand Final?” Bartel said on 3AW’s Wide World of Sports.
“Let’s get rid of the pre-finals bye, we move the bye to after the Preliminary Final. Let’s give the greater advantage to those top four teams.
“Everyone always says it turns into a Mickey Mouse game, if you were to kick off with Victoria and South Australia that is to be the champion state.
“The previous game play off for the position to play the champion state and you become the carry-over champion until you get knocked off.”
