Former premier Jeff Kennett is predicting Victoria’s housing crisis won’t be fixed unless overall building costs are lowered.

The Allan government recently announced sweeping changes to build more high-rise towers and scrap stamp duty for off-the-plan properties.

But Mr Kennett says if the cost to build properties remains high, the crisis will continue indefinitely.

“I am prepared to give the premier’s announcement the benefit of the doubt,” he said Tony Moclair on 3AW Afternoons.

“But in a year’s time, we will be no further down the road to providing accommodation because the cost to the builders remain high.
