Jeff Kennett has called out the “scaremongering” about the Indigenous voice to parliament, but says the Prime Minister must treat Australians like “adults” and explain exactly what it will look like.

The former Victorian premier is a prominent supporter of the voice and tried to provide an in-depth explanation about what it would exactly mean on 3AW on Wednesday.

“There is a lot of scaremongering going on,” Mr Kennett told Neil Mitchell.

“This voice will have no authority over the parliament, whatsoever.

“It cannot instigate legislation, it can’t stop it, it can’t change it.

“It is an advisory group so that the parliament understands the concerns of our First Nations people.”

Mr Kennett called on Anthony Albanese to be up-front with Australians.

“You know I’ve been working with the community for 40 years – I want them to be recognised and I want there to be a voice,” he said.

“But the Prime Minister cannot expect us to change the constitution without understanding what that change entails.

“I ask him to treat us like adults.”
