Jane Garrett to decide on Lord Mayor candidacy this week
Jane Garrett plans to announce this week whether she will trigger a by-election in her marginal state seat of Brunswick and run for Lord Mayor.
Ms Garrett told 3AW’s Sunday Morning that while she is keen to end the speculation around her decision as soon as possible, she has a lot to consider.
“Clearly this has come out of blue because of the very unfortunate circumstances surrounding the Town Hall, so anybody who is thinking of standing has to go through some pretty serious due diligence… You need a lot of financial support, you need to understand how the whole voting system works, and clearly there’s the by-election issue which is a major issue for me and for the party”, she said.
Ms Garrett has already confirmed that she will not recontest her marginal Brunswick seat, which is under threat from the Greens, after a failed attempt to move to a secure upper house seat last November.
A by-election to decide on the new Lord Mayor will be held on May 12.
