What makes a great burger? Is it the meat? The bun? Does it have to have a certain sauce? How much salad does one need?

The idea of a best burger is so subjective because everyone naturally likes different things right?

My favourite burger of all time is the Fergburger in Queenstown. But the budget didn’t stretch quite that far, so this week I headed down the highway to Geelong and the Boss Burger Co to try “the world’s best-selling chicken burger”.

In December 2019, the Tommy the Chook burger came in at number 6 on Deliveroo’s top 100 most ordered dishes across the world (the number one was a poke bowl from Paris of all places), and was the number one ordered item in Australia.

And the Herald Sun voted it the best burger in 2021.

Either Geelong people order a lot of home-delivered burgers or it had to be seriously good… and it is! These burgers are the ultimate hangover cure. It’s like really fancy KFC. I’ve got a lot of friends who love a good old zinger burger, but the chicken at Boss Burger is soooo much better. It’s basically oil-free. The coating is so crispy and light and the meat is juicy, without any fat at all.

The Tommy the Chook (14.50) has fried chicken, cheese, slaw and sriracha mayo and the Hen-Ry ($15) consists of chicken, tomato, cheese, lettuce and boss sauce. This was my favourite. The salad was fresh and crispy and simple!

In my opinion you can’t beat old school, crunchy iceberg lettuce. The buns are soft but not too sweet and hold the filling well. Of course there are multiple beef options — the Boss and the Boss Deluxe. We also tried the Boss and the meat was beautifully charred and I can see why it’s another popular item on the menu, which also includes BBQ rib racks and loaded fries.

Boss Burger Co has outlets around the Geelong area, one in Tasmania, and they’ve just opened a store in Warrnambool.  If you’re a burger aficionado, head west — you won’t regret it!
