Jacqui Felgate reviews the restaurant ‘worth crossing town for’
Pipis Kiosk is a restaurant hiding in plain sight.
Perched at the end of Kerford Road in Albert Park, it is an absolute find.
The space itself is minimal chic, with tones of cream and sage throughout.
The space is intimate and seats just 40… but the view! Oh the view!
We dined at 6.15pm and watched the most magnificent autumn sunset across the pier.
Pipis is “cross across town” good.
My dining companion arrived slightly frazzled after getting stuck in classic Melbourne peak hour traffic and she said it was absolutely worth the hour long trip from Hawthorn.
A delicious glass of rose and a stunning bay view cures all that ails
We started with the classic Sydney rock oysters (served with a bitey vinaigrette) and salt cod croquettes ($14) Get in my belly.
These were crunchy on the outside and just the right amount of salty cod, the four bites are served on aioli and I say this every week but I wish there were more!
A beautiful chargrilled South Australian octopus is served in a light broth with chickpeas and white radish.
Matt and Jo’s heirloom eggplant sits atop an onion cream sauce dotted with a fragrant oil.
But the special of the day was a whole flounder.
We shared this fabulous fish between three people and it was more than enough. And it was superb.
Served with a seaweed sauce – the umami flavour the perfect accompaniment.
At Pipis there’s a focus on sustainability, the menu changes regularly depending on availability and ingredients are locally sourced.
Other dishes include grilled corner inlet flathead and western Victoria lamb rib.
Do not miss the apple tarte tartin – an excellent example of the classic dish. It might be called a Kiosk but there’s nothing pedestrian about Pipis.
