Jacqui Felgate reviews: One of Melbourne’s best sandwich spots
Press PLAY below to hear where to get Melbourne’s best sandwiches (according to Jacqui!)
Growing up the only sandwich I’d eat was a ham and cheese — lucky things have moved on since the schoolyard in the 1980s!
The humble sandwich is back. And at Nico’s they’re elite.
Nico’s is classic Fitzroy cool: think plastic chairs and tables, street art cool. Music is pumping down Kerr Street and customers are already outside at 11am.
Nico’s does three types of sandwiches. Melts ($15-17), Fresh ($13-15) and Subs ($16). Melts are available from 8am and include the Tuna (tuna, capers, pickled chilli, cornichons, pickled fennel, swiss cheese on toasted sourdough – tabasco optional) the ox tail (sherry and wine brazed ox tail, beef cheek, American mustard, Taleggio swiss cheese, pickled fennel, sesame, koji chimichurri on toasted sourdough) and the Cubano, which is house-smoked pork belly, grandma smoked ham, koji chimichurri, American mustard, dill pickles cos lettuce coated in Nico’s Original Salad Cream on a toasted loaf.
The secret to Nico’s is not just the moorish fillings. The bread is chewy, light and strong enough to keep the sandwich together.
If you’re feeling a little dusty the meatball sub ($16) is the perfect hangover cure. Beef and pork meatballs, bone marrow, smoked tomato sugo, basil, pecorino, koji chimichurri, nori served on a toasted soft roll. It’s Sunday morning heaven.
Actually, you don’t really need to wait until Sunday. Nico’s will cure whatever ales you.
