Jacqui Felgate reviews: Mukka — ‘an Indian restaurant with a difference’

If there’s goat on the menu, you gotta get the goat.

And the goat curry at Mukka in St Kilda lives up to the hype. I’ll come back to that in a moment.

Fitzroy hotspot Mukka has opened a second outpost in St Kilda, bringing hot curries and cool cocktails south of the Yarra. The venue is at the old Pelican site on Fitzroy Street, which has been completely transformed. There’s a lot of rattan, a great outdoor area for summer and a long bar with plenty of stools to enjoy a drink. And there are A LOT of drinks. Ten signature cocktails, including the Mumbai monsoon, the Raj Collins and spiced maharaja sour.

The highlight of the meal for me was the Bhel Puri. Puffed rice and Bombay mix tossed with pomegranate, tomato, onion, lime, tamarind and mint. This was the perfect refreshing starter, combined with the Gobi 65. Crunchy spicy cauliflower florets deep fried. MAGIC. I could eat a bucket of these.

We then shared three curries, the palak paneer (which was super spicy) a classic butter chicken — I feel it’s a must on any Indian menu — and of course the goat curry. The goat is slow-cooked for four hours in a tomato and onion gravy, and the meat falls off the bone — definitely add it to the list.

Some fluffy garlic naan and basmati rice completed the meal,  all washed down with a few rounds of mojitos… Mukka is a great night out.
