A few experts are calling for advertising to be banned during kid’s viewing time to overcome the obesity epidemic.
Tom Elliott says companies have a right to display their products on a public forum.
‘If products are legal, and junk food is a legal product, let people advertise,’ the 3AW Drive presenter said.
Stephen Downes, lecturer in brand management at the University of Melbourne, says ads use tactics like ‘games and fantasy’ to grab the attention of kids.
‘There is evidence it has a moderate effect on kids,’ Mr. Downes said.
There is also increased pressure on parents as kids become more exposed to junk food through social media and their friends.
