There is a last-ditch effort to save the iconic Collingwood Children’s Farm from being bulldozed on Monday.

Management has announced plans for a complete redesign after several safety concerns were raised.

But angry gardeners, who work at the community site, say the issues can be resolved without completely destroying the site.

Tim Handfield is one of them and told Dee Dee Dunleavy they had been completely ignored.

“It’s a bureaucratic nightmare we are in,” he said.

“For about $120,000 we can completely rectify the safety issues, make the whole site accessible, renew any of the basic infrastructure while retaining the character of the site.

“They have just been given $880,000 – (Planning Minister) Richard Wynne has just announced this on his Facebook page – to fund consultants, to figure out what to do next after bulldozing the site and then to implement some plan to redevelopers.”

Dee Dee Dunleavy said she was infuriated by the news.

“We really need to raise our voices on this,” she said.

“It is unacceptable.

“It is such a precious part of Melbourne.”
