Influenza expert warns of ‘big upswing’ in Melbourne
Influenza cases in Victoria are on the rise, with experts reminding people to get vaccinated.
Last week, the Rumour File was told 50 young people came down with the flu after attending a party.
While that’s unconfirmed, deputy director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza, Professor Ian Barr, says “there’s certainly been a big upswing in influenza in Melbourne … in the last six weeks”.
Professor Barr says fever, cough, fatigue and sudden onset of illness are common influenza symptoms in kids.
While the flu vaccine is only about 60 to 65 per cent efficacy, Professor Barr says it “will certainly ameliorate symptoms in most people”.
