A major fire has engulfed a chemistry factory in Melbourne’s west, shutting the Western Freeway.

Emergency services were called to reports of the incident in Derrimut after 11am, with the fire also causing power issues in the area.

Nine News reporter Mimi Becker told 3AW Afternoons says the fire was sparking grass fires nearby as a result of the debris which sprayed out of the blaze.

“The fire has been burning out of control for close to two hours,” she said on 3AW.
