How to avoid becoming a victim of record flesh-eating ulcer cases

A physician has called on people to take precautionary measures now to help reduce the risk of contracting a flesh-eating ulcer.

A record number of cases were reported in 2023, promoting a warning to be issued in Victoria.

“(The disease) is being transmitted now from mosquitos,” Austin Hospital Infectious Diseases Physician Professor Paul Johnson told Ross and Russ on 3AW Breakfast.

“We are getting (bitten) in the summer months, but because it has a very long incubation period, people don’t notice anything until winter.”
