How the world reacted to Nick Kyrgios’ latest Wimbledon antics
Nick Kyrgios’ controversial run-in with rival Stefanos Tsitsipas and the chair umpire during his blockbuster Wimbledon third round clash has made news around the world, but a tennis journalist says his behaviour doesn’t reflect badly on Australia.
Kyrgios demanded Tsitsipas be defaulted after recklessly hitting a ball into the stands and almost striking a female spectator and engaged in a running battle with the chair umpire throughout the match.
Speaking after the match, Tsitsipas called Kyrgios an “evil bully”, while the Australian hit back saying the Greek star was “soft”.
Tsitsipas has been fined AUD$14,600 for hitting a ball into the crowd, and Kyrgios copped a fine of almost AUD$600 for an audible obscenity.
Contributor to The Guardian, ESPN, NY Times & TennisMajors.com, Simon Cambers, says it “was very odd”.
Mr Cambers says Kyrgios “acts the victim all the time, and that’s quite grating”.
But he says international tennis fans don’t blame Australia for the tennis star’s behaviour.
“I don’t think anyone says Kyrgios behaves like this so all Australians behave like this … although you’ve had some difficult ones in the past!,” he said.
