How the Ukraine war is affecting British fish and chip shops
The war in Ukraine is having an effect that no one expected — it’s “terrifying” the British fish and chip industry.
Ukraine and Russia are large producers of sunflower oil, which is used by many fish ‘n’ chip shops.
Due to the war, it’s becoming scarce, and the price of the oil that is available is skyrocketing.
“It’s something that wasn’t expected,” president of the National Federation of Fish Friers in the UK, Andrew Crook, told Jimmy Bartel and Shane McInnes, filling in for Ross and Russel.
“We were already experiencing some price inflation post-pandemic.
“My sunflower oil that I use in my shop went up from £30 for 20 litres to £40 last week and now £44.
“We might have fish, we might have potatoes later on in the year but we mightn’t have any oil to cook it in. It’s terrifying for our industry.”
