Refugee advocates say the Novak Djokovic saga has shone a spotlight on Australia’s immigration system and how the country treats those seeking asylum.

The tennis star was held in hotel detention alongside asylum seekers in Melbourne, some who’ve been there a decade.

Asher Hirsch, Senior Policy Officer at the Refugee Council of Australia, said Djokovic was able to get a hearing in a matter of days when many refugees are still waiting after years to have their case heard.

Djokovic may yet be deported, despite winning his case.

“Australians haven’t realised how much power is in the hands of the immigration minister,” Mr Hirsch said.
