More than 350 people ended up in Victorian emergency departments with sunburn in 2020-21, the second highest yearly number in almost two decades.

And the COVID-19 pandemic may have contributed.

Heather Walker, chair of the National Skin Cancer Committee at Cancer Council Australia, told Ross and Russel it was likely enthusiasm to get out and about in the sun after lockdowns had contributed to the high number.

“We think there is a COVID angle to this,” she said.
