How heroic surfers took down a man threatening to blow up a passenger plane
Two Australian surfers who took down a man threatening to blow up a plane in 2017 have been recognised with bravery awards for their heroism.
Troy Joyner and Fabio Contu were on their way to Bali on Malaysian Airlines flight MH128 when they heard Manodh Marks say he had a bomb and was taking it to the pilot.
The pair wasted no time springing into action.
“I had him from behind and had him choked out pretty quick and Fab was at the front attending to the bomb,” Mr Joyner told Dee Dee.
“Under his shirt he had this big round thing that was staring me in the face … with wires and that coming out of it,” Mr Contu said.
Mr Contu made a call and ripped the device off the man, and thankfully, it didn’t go off.
They used cable ties to bind Marks’ feet and hands together to restrain him.
The device later turned out to be a fake.
Both surfers are among 28 people being awarded Australian Bravery Decorations today for their courageous acts.
