There will be some 600,000 new voters in the upcoming federal election, with a majority of those young Australians who’ve turned 18 and become eligible since the last time we went to the polls.

But how will they shape the election?

Voter behaviour guru, Dr Jill Sheppard, from the Australian National University’s School of Politics, said the idea young people all voted for “progressive” politics was a myth.

“We know that most people in their first or second election tend to vote the same way their folks vote,” she said.

“It’s not until late 20s and early 30s where you really see voters kick out on their own.”
