Heroic police rescue two girls in ‘turbulent’ waters off St Kilda
Heroic police have rescued two young girls from drowning off St Kilda Pier.
Acting Sergeant Samantha Christian and Leading Senior Constable Emma Sharp stripped off and jumped into the water to help the sisters, aged 10 and 11, just after 8pm last night.
“It was really quite turbulent. There was some quite big waves breaking against the wall as we made our way out. Where we sort of really ran into trouble, at the end of the wall the current was creating a cycling vortex of water and that’s where things got a little bit complicated,” Ms Sharp told Heidi Murphy, filling in for Tom Elliott.
A member of the community, a man named Tyler, also assisted to rescue the pair.
“It was a real team effort,” Ms Sharp said.
The rescue comes after a horror 48 hours in Victoria, with three people drowning and another three hospitalised after almost drowning.
