Hawks president explains ‘significant’ payout from racism investigation

Hawthorn president Andy Gowers has confirmed that “substantial” payouts were made to cover legal costs pertaining to the racism saga the club faced starting in 2022.

Gowers told 3AW’s Wide World of Sports the fees Hawthorn owed were because of the duration and commitment to the process.

“I don’t know the exact figure, I know that it was substantial,” Gowers said.

“It went on for just over 2 years so it went for quite a while and it involved a lot of legal people.

“It was certainly a significant contribution and commitment by our club.”
