GWS chief executive Dave Matthews brushes off suggestions Lachie Whitfield could walk

GWS boss Dave Matthews has brushed off any suggestion Lachie Whitfield could be heading for the exit door.

The Giants youngster, who is currently serving a six-month ban for his alleged attempt at evading a drug test, has been linked with a move to Victoria at the end of this season or next.

He’s contracted until the end of 2018.

Matthews sounded anything but worried when asked about the 22-year-old on 3AW Football.

‘I’ve got no concern, at all, that he’ll extend at some point in time,’ Matthews said.

‘I know there’s been a bit of speculation about it.

‘It’s an unusual set of circumstances and we have supported him, but he deserved that support, by the way.

‘He’s a terrific young man.’

Matthews also issued a stern warning to North Melbourne, which has reportedly thrown big dollars at Josh Kelly.

‘I think we’ve made it pretty clear about the Kangaroos that we’ve got zero interest in any of their players,’ he said.

Whitfield is back training with the Giants and will be able to return to the field from round 8.

‘He can’t wait to get back out there and play and we’re delighted it’s only a few weeks away now,’ Matthews said.

‘He’s in good shape and we just can’t wait to see him out there.’
