Greens Senator blasts ‘insulting’ Shaq move
Greens Senator Lidia Thorpe has slammed Labor’s “insulting” move to recruit Shaquille O’Neal for the Voice to Parliament campaign.
In a press conference with Anthony Albanese on Saturday, the former NBA star announced he would be lending his support to social media videos ahead of the Voice to Parliament referendum.
Aboriginal Greens Senator Lidia Thorpe says O’Neal “does not understand what is going on in this country and he should not be commenting” on an issue which has divided Aboriginal Australians.
Press PLAY to hear Lidia Thorpe blasting the “insulting” move
“It’s an insult to blackfellas in this country, let alone the rest of the country. He’s come in and commenting on our politics in our own country which he knows nothing about except for a meeting with the Labor Party,” she told Neil Mitchell.
“We don’t know what this looks like, we don’t know what this means, and people don’t understand it. You go to remote communities … and you ask them what it means, they have no idea.
“How dare Shaq come over here and comment on something that people in our own country don’t understand.”
