The Australian Grand Prix has to be run in a more financially responsible way moving forward, according to shadow sports minister Sam Groth.

His comments come after parliamentary documents revealed Victoria taxpayers were slugged a $130 million to stage this year’s event.

Mr Groth said while the Grand Prix was one of the state’s most important major events, it wasn’t immune from being run more sustainably.

“This isn’t about attacking the Australian Grand Prix as an event,” he said on 3AW.

“We need to make sure the major events here in Victoria are done in a financially sustainable way.”
