The federal government says it is making significant progress in addressing issues with passports.

But the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs says it will still be a few weeks until the significant backlog is completely cleared.

The office has been hammered with passport applications and renewals since the country reopened after the COVID-enforced border closures.

Tim Watts told Neil Mitchell the Labor government was working around the clock to help ease pressure on the system and clear the backlog.

“We are really making progress,” he said.

“We have doubled the number of staff working in the passport office since the election.”
