A police incident in Windsor, which stretched on for hours and forced the closure of Chapel Street, has been resolved peacefully.

Police say they were called to Albert Street at about 7.30am where they negotiated with a man in his 20s who was threatening self-harm. He has been taken to hospital for assessment.

Nine News reporter on the scene, Amber Johnson, told Tony Jones there are unconfirmed reports the man was armed with a weapon and making threats to the public.

Taylor, who works in Windsor, told Tony Jones police told her “to go inside and lock the doors” due to a firearms incident.

Chapel Street remains closed between Dandenong Road and Union Street and trains are bypassing Windsor Station.
