George Pell to stand trial over historical sexual offence charges
George Pell will stand trial over multiple historical sexual offence charges.
The decision was handed down in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday morning.
Cardinal Pell has formally pleaded not guilty.
The matter will proceed to the County Court, where he will face multiple trials for each complainant, with separate juries.
But several of the charges were thrown out due to insufficient evidence.
The Archbishop of Melbourne, Denis Hart, released a statement “expressing confidence” in the judicial system in Australia and that “justice must now take its course”.
Reporter Stefanie Waclawik spoke with Neil Mitchell from outside court.
