Funny-faced thieves deal devastating blow to Melbourne venue
The owner of a live music and comedy venue in South Melbourne has been left devastated after being targeted by lion-faced thieves.
Two offenders — one wearing a rubber lion mask — broke into The Rubber Chicken on Moray Street around 5.30am on Wednesday.
While the pair only managed to steal a small amount of cash, they’ve damaged the point of sales system so the venue will remain closed until Sunday.
Owner Morry Morgan says it’s a bitter blow as his business struggles to recover from Melbourne’s COVID-19 lockdowns and disruptions.
He’s calling on the local community to rally behind his business and show it’s support for Melbourne’s live music and comedy scene.
“They smashed up our POS just trying to get small change, really, but it means we won’t be able to operate this week,” he told Ross and Russel.
“It’s a bit disappointing after all the crap we’ve had to go through over the last year.
“Unfortunately they ransacked the bar area so that we can’t operate.”
