Police will be allowed to demand ID from people inside the airport without giving reason as part of a $300 million upgrade to airport security.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull detailed the plan in a wide-ranging interview with Neil Mitchell this morning.

The federal government will roll-out new X-ray equipment. Body scanners will replace metal detectors.

An extra 190 federal police will also patrol airports.

Mr Turnbull has told Neil Mitchell they will be given extra power to conduct random checks.

Neil: “That’s a big step.”

PM: “It is.”

Neil: “Why do we need it?”

PM: “Dangerous times, Neil.”
