Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a significant expansion to the Australian Defence Force.

The $38 billion investment will see the amount of uniformed personnel grow to almost 80,000 by 2040.

It means the Defence Force is set to grow to its biggest size since the Vietnam War.

Retired Lieutenant-General and director of the University of Canberra National Security Institute, Peter Leahy, told Neil Mitchell it’s a necessary investment.

“The threats are increasing, they’re more apparent, and they’re likely to happen more quickly than when we had the luxury before of warning time,” he said.

“It is a sensible precaution to make to make sure we’ve got the defence force that we need.

“And if you just think Neil to make a Submarine Captain takes about 15 years, so you need to start now”.
