Former footy star explains how he turned his life around

Former Melbourne star Brock McLean says the AFLPA still pays for him to see a psychologist, defending the players’ association as it comes under fire for not doing enough to help former footballers who are struggling post-career.

St Kilda great Nick Riewoldt has suggested drug use is a massive issue among players after former teammate Sam Fisher was charged with drug trafficking.

Riewoldt said Fisher’s case should be a “line in the sand” moment for the AFL and the AFLPA.

McLean battled drug abuse which only escalated once his career ended and told Neil Mitchell only so much could be done to help.

“Speaking from my experience, you’re not going to get better unless you actually go out and seek the help yourself,” he said.

“You can have all the resources in the world at your fingertips, but if you’re not willing to reach out and use them, then it’s all for naught.
