Former Border Force boss: Hi-tech drones ‘the future’ of national security
Australia’s former Border Force Commissioner says the government’s $7 billion investment in hi-tech drones is the future of border protection.
The Federal Government is investing in six hi-tech drones called ‘MQ-4C TRITON long-range surveillance drones’, which each have the wing span of a Boeing 737.
Former Border Force Commissioner Roman Quaedvlieg told Neil Mitchell his description of the technology as “the mother of all drones” was apt.
“They are certainly up there in terms of upper echelon of capability,” Roman said.
“This sort of equipment allows a longer range, so these things have a range of somewhere between 12 and 15,000 kms.
“It can hover at a high altitude of 15km for a period of 30 hours.
“And it actually expands the capacity of our military and our civilian maritime security authorities to keep eyes on station.”
