Former Australian Test quick  Ryan Harris isn’t a fan of the plan to pick Steve Smith to partner Usman Khawaja at the top of the batting order.

News emerged on Tuesday that Smith would open the batting against West Indies during the upcoming two-Test series, with Cam Green to slot in at number four.

But Harris doesn’t like the idea, saying it was merely a short term fix to plug a whole in the immediate aftermath of David Warner’s retirement from Test cricket.

“It’s a short fix for what I think is a specialist position,” he told Matt Granland on Wide World of Sports.

“A specialist opener should be picked, the reasoning would be getting Cam Green back into the team and that part I don’t mind. But in my mind, it’s not a great move for the long term and our opening batters.”
