Former Australian Test captain Mark Taylor has backed plans for Steve Smith to move up the order and open the batting for Australia following David Warner’s retirement from Test cricket.

The race to replace David Warner is on ahead of the two-Test series against West Indies, which begins in Adelaide next week.

While names such as Cam Bancroft and Cam Green have been floated, Taylor says he’s a fan of Smith opening alongside Usman Khawaja.

“I think it’s really good that (Steve Smith has) put his hand up and say he’s prepared to open,” Taylor said on Wide World of Sports.

“Maybe he’s looking for a new challenge and something to keep him going for a couple more years, I don’t mind that idea.”
