3AW was flooded with calls on Friday afternoon, with reports a red Holden Commodore was doing burnouts outside Flinders Street Station.
That car then sped through the Bourke Street mall, collecting multiple people.
Five of those victims have since died. One of them was a young child.
Several others are listed as critical, including a three-month-old baby.
A man has been arrested and charged.

Former police commissioner Christine Nixon narrowly avoided being struck by the car.
She witnessed much of the horror.
‘I was on the corner of William Street and Bourke and just crossing the road there when the car came down the pedestrian path,’ she told 3AW.
‘People called out, there were people yelling as the car came down.’
